“The trees act not as individuals, but somehow as a collective. Exactly how they do this, we don’t yet know. But what we see is the power of unity. What happens to one happens to us all. We can starve together or feast together.”
― Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants
Reciprocity is defined as the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit.
Archaeologists Richard Leakey and Kurt Lewin said: “We are human because our ancestors learned to share their food and their skills in an honored network of obligation.” Reciprocity is a powerful leadership competency, because it creates an understanding of the strength of diversity.
I wonder how some of the issues with institutional inequalities would shift if the laws, policies and practices shifted to a model of mutual benefit? That diverse views and ways of being and knowing were seen as adding strength?
